OverviewHealth and Usage Monitoring - HUM - is a technology that was developed in the 1980's that would both determine the usage and the health of the dynamic components of the helicopter's power train. The usage monitoring allows safe use of component lives to be determined utilising the actual usage spectrum of the helicopter and any exceedances of the operating envelope analysed to take the most appropriate maintenance to ensure continued airworthiness. The primary function of HUM systems is the Health monitoring to alert operators to potential helicopter defects to enable maintenance intervention before the fault threatens the airworthiness of the helicopter. HUM systems also have the potential to streamline maintenance and reduce the helicopter's Direct Operating Costs.
In the Early 1990's the saw the introduction of Cockpit Voice and Flight Data recorders - CVFDRS - in the North Sea and with them the first HUM systems. The North Sea is now fully equipped with HUM and a number of key military operators such as the US Navy, UK Ministry of Defence have also committed to fleet wide fits, but with approximately 300 helicopters world wide fitted with HUM the experience base is still very limited. |
